Oral Examination

Early Detection Saves Lives

Regular oral examinations can detect potentially serious conditions at their earliest, most treatable stages. If you notice any of these warning signs persisting for more than 2 weeks, schedule a professional evaluation immediately.

White Patches

White Patches (Leukoplakia)

Thickened white patches that cannot be scraped off. May be precancerous. Common on tongue, gums, and inner cheeks.

Red Patches

Red Patches (Erythroplakia)

Velvety red lesions with higher malignant potential than white patches. Often found on floor of mouth or tongue.

Mixed Patches

Mixed Red/White Patches

Combination lesions (erythroleukoplakia) with both red and white components. High risk of malignant transformation.

Non-healing Sores

Non-healing Sores

Ulcers that persist beyond 2 weeks, especially those that bleed easily. May appear as crater-like lesions.

Other Important Warning Signs

  • Thickened oral tissue: Abnormal growth or texture changes
  • Masses or lumps: In mouth, jaw, or neck area

Oral Pathologies

Oral pathologies are deviations from healthy oral tissue. Not all are cancerous, but some can progress if untreated. Look for:

  • White patches (leukoplakia)
  • Red patches (erythroplakia)
  • Mixed white and red patches (erythroleukoplakia)
  • Sores, ulcers, or lesions that bleed or do not heal
  • Lumps or thickened tissue in the mouth
  • Masses or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
  • Chronic sore throat, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing/chewing

Early evaluation by an OMS is critical. Some lesions are precancerous and require treatment before they progress.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. Early detection dramatically improves survival rates, which can reach 80–90% when diagnosed early.

Major Types:

  • Oral & oropharyngeal cancer
  • Laryngeal & hypopharyngeal cancer
  • Nasal cavity & paranasal sinus cancer
  • Nasopharyngeal cancer
  • Salivary gland cancer

Symptoms:

  • Persistent mouth sores or pain
  • Numbness or tingling in the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue
  • Lumps in the neck or cheek
  • Loose teeth, jaw, or ear pain
  • White, red, or mixed patches in the mouth

A biopsy by an OMS is essential for diagnosis and staging.

MRONJ: Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Certain medications, such as bisphosphonates or RANKL inhibitors, can affect jawbone healing. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, inflammation, and anatomical variations.

Treatment Approaches:

  • Antibiotics for infection
  • Maintaining excellent oral hygiene
  • Surgical removal of necrotic bone in severe cases
  • Pain management

Tobacco, E-Cigarettes & Oral Health

Tobacco and vaping increase the risk of oral, head, and neck cancers. Avoid smoking, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes to protect oral health.

Key Facts:

  • Smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer and other diseases
  • Secondhand smoke is carcinogenic
  • Smokeless tobacco strongly linked to oral cancer
  • E-cigarettes and vaping have unknown long-term effects
