🌟 Why Nutrition Matters

Good nutrition is a cornerstone of recovery after oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as general dental treatments. Eating the right foods helps:

  • Reduce pain, swelling, and complications
  • Boost energy and immunity
  • Prevent malnutrition during restricted eating

🦷 After Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Surgeries like wisdom tooth extraction, dental implants, jaw fracture repair, or orthognathic surgery require special dietary adjustments.

❌ Foods to Avoid

  • Spicy, acidic, or very hot foods - Can irritate surgical sites
  • Hard/crunchy foods - Chips, nuts, raw vegetables, crackers
  • Sticky foods - Chewing gum, caramel, toffee, dried fruits
  • Small seeds - Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, strawberry seeds
  • Carbonated drinks, alcohol, smoking - Can disrupt healing
  • Foods requiring chewing - Meat, raw fruits/vegetables, bread

🕒 Eating Guidelines

  • Eat small, frequent meals (5-6 times daily) rather than 3 large meals
  • Stay hydrated with water, but avoid using straws (can dislodge blood clots)
  • Foods should be at room temperature or cool - avoid very hot foods
  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth from the surgical site
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after eating to keep the area clean
  • Return to normal foods gradually after 7–14 days depending on healing progress

🪥 After General Dental Care

After Scaling & Polishing

Avoid tea, coffee, colored foods, and smoking for 24-48 hours to prevent staining. Stick to soft, non-abrasive foods.

After Tooth Fillings

Avoid chewing on the treated side until anesthesia wears off completely. Be cautious with very hard or sticky foods.

After Root Canal Treatment

Soft foods only until a permanent crown is placed. Avoid biting hard on the treated tooth to prevent fracture.

For General Oral Health

  • Calcium-rich foods: milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy greens, almonds
  • Vitamin D sources: sunlight exposure, fortified milk, fatty fish
  • Vitamin C foods: citrus fruits, guava, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli
  • Phosphorus sources: fish, eggs, lean meat, nuts, legumes
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, fish
  • Crunchy fruits/vegetables: apples, carrots, celery (natural cleansers)
